Slade's Story

I am Slade, I was born in 1976, I have ADHD, I am dyslexic and have other academic learning issues. I have had quite a diverse and fascinating journey in my life and the automotive industry. I was a Cub and a Scout at 1st Craighall and did the 21st PLTU before becoming a Cub then Scout Master at my Scout Hall. With regards to the auto Industry, I Started with my technical matric in Motor Mechanics from Ferndale High School in 1996, I began my career as an apprentice at Lindsay Sakers in Randburg. After successfully completing the qualifying exams, I initially worked as a VW apprentice and later moved to Audi, where I qualified as an "A" grade mechanic in 1999.

Continuing my education, I joined Corvette Motors under the guidance of Harry Rutger, a Stuttgart Master Mechanic. There, I had the opportunity to work on various high-end sports cars such as Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Ferrari, alongside older models. However, personal circumstances led me to take a break from working on cars, as I needed to focus on my divorce and the custody of my infant son.

During this transformative period, I discovered that many young people were seeking my advice on their cars, one of your most valuable assets, even those who owned high-end vehicles were asking. During this realization I began working at the Bushveld pub and Diner. Later, I became a service advisor and team leader at Norman's Toyota, leveraging my expertise to assist customers effectively.

My career trajectory took another turn when I became a Wesbank Government vehicle advisor. My role required a police clearance certification. Responsible for servicing and repairs of Government vehicles and cash-in-transit "Coin Securities" vehicles. Though I performed well in this position, I realized that the office environment, with its cubicles and lack of flexibility, was not a suitable fit for my hyperactive and jovial nature.

In true entrepreneurial spirit, I ventured into starting my own companies under the SladeGate Industries banner. One of these ventures was Slade's Mobile Mechanics, where I provided on-site car servicing for customers.

During my career I evolved and learned how to embrace various roles within the automotive industry, from being a skilled mechanic to a knowledgeable service advisor. My experience and expertise are undoubtedly valuable assets that have benefitted countless car owners throughout my journey.

It's incredible how the idea for Dads Auto Advice (DAA) grew and developed over time, starting with those small pieces of paper containing notes and ideas that I gathered in a shoebox. As friends and family continued to seek my advice on basic car questions, I recognized the diminishing trend of passing down automotive knowledge from older generations to younger ones. This realization sparked the need for a course like DAA, which I began conceptualizing more than 12 years ago.

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown presented an opportune moment for reflection and action. While facing the challenges of running a Handyman company called Slade’s Handymen and the uncertainty of the times, I rediscovered the shoebox full of ideas and enlisted the support of my wife, Robyn. Together, we transformed the handwritten notes into a comprehensive business plan, which received an overwhelmingly positive response from those who had the opportunity to review it.

Feeling a mix of nerves, fear, and excitement, I decided to take the leap form Slade’s Handymen and put my plan into action. With the shift towards remote work and virtual communication platforms like Zoom and Teams, my Handyman client base also shifted, with many of my high-end clients relocating overseas or to coastal areas. This change allowed my wife and I to dedicate more effort and focus to Dads Auto Advice.

It's was inspiring to take the initiative to address the need for automotive knowledge and provide valuable guidance to others. The adaptability and determination we demonstrated during challenging times like the pandemic truly show our commitment to making DAA a success.

It's remarkable the collaborative effort and support we received from our loved ones in shaping Dads Auto Advice (DAA). The name itself, suggested by my personally adopted little sister Alison, captures the essence of the company's mission perfectly.

In addition to Alison's contribution, Robyn's older brother Rodney, a journalist and editor, played a crucial role in editing and refining the ever-evolving course manual. His expertise in UK English spelling and punctuation helped ensure that the material was presented accurately and professionally.

The proverbial saying "it takes a village to raise a child" resonates strongly with me as we acknowledge the invaluable support and assistance we received from our "village." This collective effort highlights the importance of community and collaboration in nurturing and growing a business.

The DAA course holds great value for its participants. By investing in the course and taking it seriously, individuals can save a significant amount of money over time, considering the high costs associated with servicing and repairs at agents' workshops for various car brands like Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW, and Toyota. Gaining the knowledge to avoid unnecessary fees and making informed decisions regarding car maintenance and repairs can result in substantial savings in the long run.

Modern challenges, such as single parenthood or fathers with limited automotive knowledge, emphasize the need for accessible and practical resources like DAA. While online platforms like Google can provide information, relying on them during a roadside emergency may pose safety concerns and be time-consuming. DAA aims to equip individuals with practical knowledge and a comprehensive understanding of their vehicles, one of their most significant investments. This empowerment enables them to protect themselves from potential exploitation by repair shops, identify any misconduct or incorrect practices by garage attendants, and perform basic tasks such as changing light bulbs, windscreen wipers, and fuses safely.

With its one-day fun-filled course format filled with practical learning and enjoyable experiences, DAA provides participants with essential life skills that have a lasting impact as well as a manual detailing the course that can be kept in the glove box of your car.

By enrolling in DAA, individuals can not only save money but also enhance their confidence and autonomy when it comes to car maintenance and repairs.

We have enthusiasm and passion for the Dads Auto Advice (DAA) course. The course's content, covering basic car knowledge such as changing tyres, checking fluids, and the battery, ensures that participants have a solid foundation in understanding their vehicles.

Their feedback, whether it was positive criticism or encouragement, has been instrumental in the success and development of DAA.

To the few individuals who expressed negative views about DAA, it is important to remember that everyone is entitled to their opinions. We choose to forgive and understand that negativity can sometimes stem from jealousy or different pespectives. It's essential to stay focused on your goals and continue pursuing your dreams.

To you, the individual reading this message, remember that just one person's negativity should not deter you from pursuing your ideas or improving upon existing ones. Surround yourself with positivity and supportive individuals who appreciate your research and endeavors. Dare to dream and believe in your abilities.

An old proverb states, "If you can make money doing your hobby, you will never work a day in your life." There are billions of people in the world who will appreciate and support your dreams. Embrace their positivity, let go of negativity, and soar as you showcase your ideas and talents.

Pursuing an idea and seeing it through to fruition is a remarkable feat, especially when faced with the challenges of a demanding job - physically, emotionally, and mentally. It takes determination, perseverance, and a willingness to put in the extra effort during every free moment, even when it feels overwhelming. But when you can finally witness your dream becoming a reality, it's an incredibly rewarding experience.

To those who have expressed negativity or doubt, it's important to acknowledge that their skepticism can sometimes be the fuel that propels us forward. Their doubts serve as a source of motivation to prove them wrong and demonstrate the strength of our resolve. We should be grateful for their presence in our journey, as they unwittingly push us to achieve even greater heights.

In a world where negativity can sometimes overwhelm us, it's crucial to remember the power of love and respect.
